HOW SMUDGE EARTH BEGAN
IT STARTED WITH SOMETHING GOOD THAT ALMOST NOBODY COULD SEE.
IT STARTED WITH SOMETHING GOOD THAT ALMOST NOBODY COULD SEE.
Smudge Earth began after its founder saw the impact of an environmental initiative connected to a business she was working with. Twenty tonnes of ocean plastic had been removed. It was real. It happened. It mattered. But outside the people directly involved, almost nobody knew. Environmental activity happens every day across businesses, schools, communities and ordinary life. Yet much of that activity disappears from view once it is over. That raised a different question.

WHAT IF WE COULD MAKE IT VISIBLE?

THE THINKING BEHIND IT
I BUILD SYSTEMS BY LOOKING FOR WHAT’S MISSING BETWEEN THE PARTS.
I BUILD SYSTEMS BY LOOKING FOR WHAT’S MISSING BETWEEN THE PARTS.
My background is in operational systems. I have spent years looking at how people move through complex processes, where friction appears, where information gets lost and why systems repeatedly create work they should prevent. Smudge Earth came from applying the same thinking to environmental activity. I wasn’t looking to build another climate app. I was looking at a simpler problem. Environmental outcomes are measured. Environmental programmes exist. People and organisations are already participating. But the activity underneath those outcomes is often fragmented, temporary or reconstructed later. Smudge Earth was designed to give that activity somewhere to persist, together with the evidence, provenance, context and confidence that develops around it.
